FAA Ground School with the Flying Midshipmen Association aboard the
USS MIDWAY CV 41
From the Skipper,
Welcome Aboard!
My name is Lieutenant Commander Tom Blackshear of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps. I have a challenge for you. Learn to fly. Yes, it's a challenge, but as a Sea Cadet, you are up to the task.
It starts here aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway. The USS Midway Museum, located in San Diego, California, is a living history treasure. She transited the oceans of the world for 47 years, longer than any other United States Navy ship in the 20th century. During that time, a total over 225,000 young seamen manned her decks, projecting Navy Seapower anyplace she chose.
While the USS Midway Museum becomes your home for two weeks, a former Naval Aviator and Certified Flight Instructor leads classes designed to certify you as ready to take flight lessons, and ultimately become a Private Pilot. Following successful completion of this course, you may contact your local flight training school to shop for flight lessons. The certification earned here is the legal means to begin actual flight training.
This program is named in honor of the The Flying Midshipmen Association. The Flying Midshipmen were a group of young men who were half-way through college, wished to become Naval Aviators, and to satisfy the need for Naval Aviators, were taught to fly, with the promise of having time to finish college and receive a Commission in the Navy as an Officer. We salute these gentlemen for answering the call to duty, and for serving with distinction for many years.
And, as members of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps, you know the classes will offer excellent instruction, materials, and mentoring. You have a great opportunity to learn flight basics, navigation, instrumentation, power plants, flight dynamics, meteorology, communications and much more.
And, even as this seems to be all work and no play, you will get "stick-time" in a small private aircraft, flying in the San Diego airspace. This time will become your first entry in your own pilot's logbook.
The requirements to register for this training evolution are:
1. Naval Sea Cadet Recruit Training complete, and E-2.
2. 3.0 GPA minimum, providing most recent report card for approval.
3. 15 years of age prior to arriving at training.
